Lexie: I would like to welcome Kristan Harrington and thank her for joining us today to discuss MR Safety concerns for with hearing protection while scanning.  She works with Bill Faulkner for William Faulkner & Associates.  They are consultants providing many types of MR education but currently with a specialized focus on all aspects of MR Safety.

Thank you for joining us today Kristan.  I would like to ask you a few questions if that is okay.

 

Kristan: Thank you for having me today. I am happy to answer any questions you have.

 

Lexie: Question 1: Kristan, can you explain exactly what causes the acoustic noise in the MR environment?

 

Lexie: Question 2: Are there limits to the noise levels that anyone in the MR room are allowed to be exposed to?

 

Lexie: Question 3:  Kristan, are the MR manufacturers limited as to the maximum amount of acoustic noise that systems can produce?

 

Lexie: Question 4: Is there a proper method for inserting earplugs and what decibel reduction is recommended?

 

Lexie:  Question 5: Finally, Kristan are there any concerns with acoustic noise

 as it pertains to MRI imaging in pregnant patients or fetal imaging?

Multiple Sclerosis

Summary

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated process where the body’s immune system attacks the central nervous system. This causes inflammation that damages myelin which the insulation around nerve fibers. This can causes an impact on sensory and motor function. The cause of MS is unknown.

  • Risk factors for MS involve lw vitamin D levels in blood.This can be caused by low amount of sunlight exposure.
  • Smoking increases a persons risk of developing MS.
  • Obesiity in childhood and adolescences should an increased risk.
  • Women are 2-3x more likely to be diagnosed with MS.
  • Individuals between the ages of 20 and 50 are at risk.

There is no cure for MS.

MRI Images

T1 Without Contrast

Hypointense areas may indicate permanent nerve damage.

T1 With Contrast

Enhancing lesion may indicate areas of active inflammation.

FLAIR

Hyperintense areas will show MS activity with reduced interference from CSF.
